If India’s startup boom is reinterpreted in the AI era, the issue becomes more complex.

Whether a startup can survive today no longer depends only on a good idea and a funding round. It also depends on whether it can obtain compute, whether it can connect to basic cloud services, whether it can use data within regulatory boundaries, whether it can secure distribution through platforms, and whether it can find differentiation amid increasingly intense model competition.

This means the startup ecosystem is shifting from being “capital-driven” to “infrastructure-driven.” In the past, the key question was who to invest in; today, it is increasingly important who can access AI capabilities and digital infrastructure at lower cost and higher efficiency. For a market like India, this shift has an amplifying effect: if infrastructure is sufficiently widespread, startup opportunities will spread to a broader population; if infrastructure is unevenly distributed, the startup boom may remain confined to a few major cities.

At the same time, AI startups will bring new regulatory and security challenges. As more companies rely on models and data systems, cybersecurity, identity verification, data compliance, and supply chain security will shift from “technical issues” to “business issues.” This is especially critical for startups, because they often have the least security investment while being the most dependent on external platforms and third-party services.
